Why It Matters

Arborist-Guided Planting — Right Tree, Right Place, Right Time

Planting a tree feels like a straightforward decision. In practice, it is one of the most consequential things you can do for your property — and one of the most common areas where well-intentioned efforts go wrong. The species matters. The location matters. The depth, soil preparation, root handling, and post-planting care all matter.

A tree planted incorrectly may look fine for the first year or two, and then decline steadily as structural problems take hold underground. Every planting project at San Jose Tree Service & Landscaping is guided by a Board-Certified Master Arborist — your tree selection and placement are informed by biology, site conditions, and long-term planning, not guesswork or aesthetics alone.

We approach planting as infrastructure — because that's exactly what a well-chosen tree is.

What We Know

Why Proper Planting Matters More Than Most Homeowners Realize

The most common planting mistakes are invisible at first. By the time symptoms appear, the underlying problem has often been present for years.

🌱

Depth & Root Flare

Planting too deep is one of the leading causes of long-term tree decline. It suffocates the root flare and creates conditions for decay at the base — often invisible until the damage is well established.

🌍

Site & Species Match

A tree planted in the wrong location may eventually compromise your foundation, sidewalk, or sewer line — or simply never thrive. What looks right at the nursery isn't always right for the location.

📋

Local Permits & Rebates

Park strip plantings in San Jose require a permit before work begins. San Jose's Tree Rebate Program offers rebates for qualifying plantings — but only when the species, placement, and permits are handled correctly from the start.

Is This Right for You?

You May Benefit from a Planting Consultation If:

A conversation with our arborist is always the right first step — before a tree is selected, before a permit is filed, and before any hole is dug.

  • You want to add a tree but aren't sure which species is appropriate for the location
  • You're replacing a tree that was recently removed and want to replant in the same area
  • You're planning a new landscape and want trees integrated thoughtfully from the start
  • You're interested in park strip planting and want to understand the permit and rebate process
  • You have a mature tree that needs to be relocated rather than removed
  • You want to improve shade, privacy, or canopy coverage with the right long-term plan

"The goal is always a healthy tree — not just a planted one."

Start with a Site Evaluation

Before any tree is selected, we assess your soil, drainage, sun exposure, proximity to structures, and your goals for the space. What the site can support shapes everything that follows.

Our Process

Our Arborist-Guided Planting Process

Every step informed by biology, site conditions, and a genuine commitment to long-term outcomes.

01

Site Evaluation

Before any tree is selected, we assess the planting site — including soil composition, drainage, sun and wind exposure, proximity to structures, and underground utilities. What the site can support shapes everything that follows.

02

Species Selection

Based on the site evaluation and your goals for the space, we recommend species suited to our South Bay climate, local soil conditions, and the long-term role you want the tree to play. We factor in mature size, root behavior, water needs, and seasonal characteristics. The goal is always the right tree in the right place.

03

Planting Preparation

We prepare the site according to ISA planting standards — which includes proper hole dimensions, soil amendments where needed, identification and removal of girdling roots, and correct placement of the root flare. This step is where most planting errors occur, and where our arborist oversight makes the greatest difference.

04

Planting and Establishment

The tree is set at the correct depth, backfilled properly, and staked only when necessary and in a way that supports — rather than restricts — natural trunk development. A mulch ring is applied to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature through the critical establishment period.

05

Aftercare Guidance

We complete every planting with a walkthrough covering watering schedules, what to watch for during establishment, and when to expect the tree to show signs of healthy growth. A tree's first one to two seasons are the most critical, and we want you to feel confident in caring for it.

Transplanting

Moving an Established Tree

Transplanting is a fundamentally different challenge from new planting. Moving an established tree disrupts the root system it has built over years — success depends on careful timing, precise root preparation, and honest assessment.

We have experience transplanting trees and shrubs across a wide range of sizes — from smaller ornamental specimens to large, established trees where conditions allow for successful relocation
Every transplant project is evaluated individually, with an honest assessment of the tree's likelihood of successful establishment in its new location
If the tree is unlikely to survive the move, we will tell you that clearly — rather than proceed with a project that isn't in the tree's best interest
Timing, root preparation, and proper handling throughout the process are what determine transplant success — we manage all of it

Our Difference

Why Homeowners Choose Us

Homeowners across San Jose trust us with their planting projects because they want confidence that the tree they're investing in has been given every advantage from day one. We are not a volume-based planting service. Every species recommendation, site decision, and installation step is guided by arborist expertise and a genuine commitment to long-term outcomes.

Tree selection and planting in the South Bay requires an understanding of our specific climate — mild winters, extended dry summers, and periodic heat events that stress newly planted trees significantly. We're also familiar with local permit requirements across San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Campbell, and surrounding cities.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Tree Planting & Transplanting

When is the best time to plant a tree in San Jose?

Fall is generally the most favorable season for planting in the South Bay. Cooler temperatures reduce transplant stress, and the approaching winter rains help newly planted trees establish root systems before the demands of summer heat. Spring can also work well for many species. Summer planting is possible but requires a more intensive watering commitment to protect trees during the establishment period. Our arborist will factor in the specific species and your site conditions when recommending timing.

Do I need a permit to plant a tree in San Jose?

For trees planted on private property, a permit is typically not required. However, if you're planting in the park strip — the area between the sidewalk and the street — San Jose requires a permit before any tree is planted there. The city's Tree Rebate Program also offers a rebate of up to $100 for qualifying park strip plantings, provided the tree is an approved street tree species and properly permitted. We can help you navigate this process and identify whether your planned planting qualifies.

How do I know which tree is right for my property?

Species selection should be driven by the specific conditions of your site — soil type, drainage, sun exposure, available space at maturity, proximity to structures, and your goals for shade, privacy, or aesthetics. What looks right at the nursery isn't always right for the location. Our arborist will evaluate your site and recommend species suited to both your property and our local South Bay climate before any purchase is made.

Can any tree be successfully transplanted?

Not every tree is a good candidate for transplanting. Success depends on the tree's species, age, current health, root structure, and the conditions of both the original and destination sites. Smaller trees and certain species tolerate relocation well. Larger, more established trees can sometimes be moved successfully with proper preparation, but it requires an honest assessment of risk. We'll evaluate the specific tree and give you a clear picture of what's realistic before any work is planned.

What's the most common reason newly planted trees fail?

The most frequent cause is planting depth — specifically, planting too deep. When the root flare is buried, the tree struggles to develop a healthy root system and becomes susceptible to decay at the base. Inadequate watering during the establishment period is a close second, particularly for trees planted in spring or summer in our dry climate. Both issues are entirely preventable with proper installation and a clear aftercare plan, which is why we finish every planting project with a walkthrough covering exactly what your tree needs in the weeks and months ahead.

Plant with Confidence.
Grow with Purpose.

Whether you're planning a single tree or a larger planting project, the right starting point is a conversation with our team. We'll evaluate your site, discuss your goals, and give you an honest picture of what will thrive on your property for decades to come.
