When a new accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was being added to this Los Gatos property, the general contractor brought in San Jose Tree Service & Landscaping to handle the entire landscape scope. With mature trees onsite and the need for quality craftsmanship across multiple landscape features, they were looking for one subcontractor to manage everything without compromising on quality or communication.
Why We Were Brought In
The general contractor wanted a single partner they could trust to complete all aspects of the landscape installation. They did not want to juggle multiple subs or risk hiring companies that might fall short. Their reputation was on the line, and they needed a landscape partner who could deliver precision, reliability, and care—especially given the presence of a mature oak tree that anchored the entire yard.
We were chosen for our ability to manage every part of the landscape scope in-house and for our arboricultural expertise. Protecting existing trees during construction is a responsibility we take seriously. The contractor was confident that we could install all hardscape and softscape elements while preserving the health and integrity of the site’s most important natural asset.
The Problem We Solved
A large portion of this project was located directly under the canopy of a mature oak tree. It was critical that the construction of the deck, the ADU, and the jacuzzi all be completed without disturbing the root zone or impacting the health of the tree. In addition, the backyard had a low spot that collected water during the rainy season, making it unusable without a proper drainage solution.
We solved both challenges. Our team installed a sump pump and drainage system to collect and redirect water out to the street, ensuring the yard would remain functional throughout the year. And every construction activity that took place beneath the oak was completed with detailed planning and extreme care to protect the tree’s root system and overall health.
What We Did
This was a full-scale installation, involving both technical problem solving and aesthetic design. Services included:
- Construction of a large Trex deck under the oak canopy
- Installation of a prefabricated wood gazebo for shaded seating
- Custom barbecue island construction
- Jacuzzi installation, carefully placed and supported for long-term performance
- Artificial turf installation for year-round usability and low maintenance
- Decomposed granite patio for a natural yet clean surface
- Retaining wall construction to manage elevation and support usable space
- Steel planter bed edging for clean separation of plant zones
- Complete irrigation system installation tailored to plant needs and layout
- Sump pump and drainage system installation to resolve backyard pooling
- Paver installation for walkways and structured space
- Full plant and tree installation, selected for longevity and regional suitability
- Mulch placement to retain soil moisture and provide a finished look
- Installation of multiple fountains to add sound and movement to the space
- Placement of large decorative pots with plants to soften architectural features
Each phase of work was planned and executed in coordination with the general contractor, ensuring deadlines were met and quality remained high.
The Outcome
This project was completed on time and on budget, with no compromise in quality. Two years after installation, the photos of this space speak for themselves. The tree remains healthy and vibrant, the artificial turf still looks fresh, and every feature from the pergola to the fountains continues to function as intended. Because they are on our recurring maintenance plan we ensure their investment is preserved and the landscape always looks its best.
What began as a construction support role became a full transformation of the outdoor space. Our ability to handle every aspect of the job with professionalism and care gave the general contractor confidence, and the homeowner a finished landscape that is both beautiful and built to last.
